New year, new you: Aligning your goals with health insurance

As we step into the new year, many of us are setting health goals, seeking to improve our well-being. But how can health insurance fit into this renewed focus on health?

We sat down with our friendly insurance adviser Stephen Hobson, to discuss how health cover can support your health goals for 2024 and beyond.

Have goals for the new year? Time to stop and take stock

The beginning of a new year can be a great opportunity to reassess many aspects of our lives, including our health. And health insurance can be a crucial part of this journey.

“If you have a health goal in mind, it’s always important to know where you’re starting from,” Stephen explains. “For example, you may be able to use your health insurance to get a key annual check-up done: this can tell you about your current health and if your New Year’s goal is actually beneficial for your body. Importantly, it can help you set realistic and informed goals.”

How health cover can be your wellness ally

Rather than just stepping in at claim time, more and more insurance providers are focusing on helping their customers stay healthy. That’s where having insurance can be a key motivator. “Some life and health insurance providers offer rewards for healthy living, in the form of gym discounts and free health checks, just to name a couple of examples,” Stephen says.

And according to Stephen, there’s another way that insurance can motivate you. “Let’s say you make a significant health improvement, like quitting smoking for good for more than 12 months. Depending on your policy, these achievements can lead to a reassessment of your coverage needs and might even result in lower premiums. So, make sure you keep your provider in the loop, or contact us directly if you’d like to know more: we can help you ensure that your cover reflects your current health status and lifestyle.”

Growing your family in 2024? We’re here to help

“One of the things I love the most about being an insurance adviser is talking to young families who are thinking about protecting their future,” Stephen says. “It’s rewarding to know that you’re helping them plan for tomorrow and achieve peace of mind.”

It’s just one key example of the difference that an open conversation with an insurance adviser can make.

“People often insure their cars and houses, but they sometimes overlook the most valuable assets they have – themselves and their family’s well-being. Many new parents, for example, don’t know that they can add their baby to their existing health cover before they’re three months old, with the provider covering qualifying pre-existing conditions the baby may have,” Stephen says.

“An adviser can help you navigate the complexities of personal insurance, ensuring that your coverage is tailored to your family’s specific needs and circumstances.”

Consider annual insurance reviews

“The bottom line is that a lot can change in a year, often more than we even realise. Whether it’s a change in jobs, income, or family structure, make sure you consider doing a review whenever major life changes happen,” Stephen observes.

“It’s easy to overlook these changes as life gets busy, but they can have a significant impact. An overlooked job promotion, for example, might mean you’re underinsured, or a new addition to the family could require broader coverage. Staying proactive with your insurance reviews is key to maintaining peace of mind, this year and in the future.”
